MCP authorization
In short:MCP authorization is the part of the Model Context Protocol that says how an MCP client proves it may call an MCP server. It uses OAuth 2.1, protected resource metadata and, since the 2026-07-28 specification, Client ID Metadata Documents for client registration.
What is it?
The MCP server acts as an OAuth resource server. The client discovers the authorization server, gets a token and presents it on each request.
The 2026-07-28 specification made the core stateless, added header routing for gateways and replaced Dynamic Client Registration with CIMD.
Why do agents need it?
Without it, MCP servers fall back to static API keys pasted into config files. Those keys are standing credentials that nobody rotates.
A shared authorization model also lets a gateway inspect and enforce policy on MCP traffic in one place.
Which scored platforms name it?
- Descope: Names MCP authorization, DCR and CIMD. ds-hub, ds-hub3
- Idira: Obtains MCP access tokens for agents and names OAuth 2.1 and DCR. id-docs
- Aembit: Names MCP, and its MCP Identity Gateway exchanges credentials on each request. ae-home
Other scored platforms: not found in public material read on 3 November 2026.
