OAuth 2.1
In short:OAuth 2.1 is the consolidated version of OAuth 2.0. It folds in years of security advice: PKCE for every client, no implicit flow and exact redirect matching. MCP authorization builds on it, so an agent that reaches tools through MCP meets OAuth 2.1 sooner or later.
What is it?
OAuth 2.1 tidies OAuth 2.0 into one document. It removes the implicit grant and the password grant. It requires PKCE for authorization code flows and exact redirect URI matching.
Bearer tokens stay, but the guidance pushes toward short lifetimes and sender-constrained tokens.
Why do agents need it?
Agents call many APIs on short notice. A single, stricter profile means fewer unsafe options for an agent framework to pick by mistake.
The MCP authorization specification is written on top of OAuth 2.1, so tool servers and clients share one baseline.
